Silver Strand State Beach 2022

Since we have to be out of Pio Pico Thousand Trails for a week after staying for three weeks, we went for three nights at the Chula Vista Elks, and then to our local “vacation spot” – Silver Strand State Beach for four nights. We arrived May 30 and departed June 3.

While not far, it wasn’t all smooth sailing getting there. As we were leaving the Elks we heard a noise as though something was dragging. Barry got out and checked. It seemed to be OK. Then as we were heading down the steep driveway from the Elks parking lot, we had a definite scraping. We stopped midway down the driveway. Seems we weren’t completely aired up so the Newmar rear mud flap was scraping the asphalt. We ended up pulling into the nearby strip mall, unhooked the Jeep, did our best to release the air and air up yet again.  Still the back was dragging, especially the driver side. Since the drive to the beach was relatively flat, I followed in the Jeep and watched for sparks or anything else that could be a problem. We drove with our hazard lights flashing since we were going under the speed limit. While on the 805 I thought I saw the back end on the driver side slowly rise. It appeared to be level all across the back of the motorhome and the mudflap was evenly above the ground. I moved into the next lane to the left and pulled up parallel to Vinny.  Seeing the nice gap between the top of the tire and the coach above it, I knew we had finally aired all the way up! Whew! We still proceeded cautiously to the beach, and made it without any additional issues.

We parked quickly and easily in site #428. We had plenty of room for the Jeep in front of Vinny. The end site (#429) that we can never seem to reserve was vacant when we arrived. This gave us even more of a spacious, open feeling to our site, as well as more privacy and unobstructed views. We knew it was not likely to be empty long! We kept expecting someone to come into the site, but we totally lucked out. Site 429 stayed unoccupied for our entire stay!! Win! Win! That was even better than being in that site.

Below are our views from inside Vinny.

Time at Silver Strand was our “chill time”. We took several walks along the beach, but refrained from walking all the way to IB (Imperial Beach)! We learned our lesson on that last time. While it didn’t look that far, it is about 9 miles round trip. Walking that far on sand really affected my knees and Barry’s back on the way back.

Barry started collecting some nice sand dollars. We had a decent collection by June 3.

As we were walking, I saw a collection of “butterflies”. It was pretty cool how many of these shells were in this section of the beach.

This was a pretty cool shell that was still occupied. We saw several of them and let them be.

One day it took till about 5 o’clock before the sun starting breaking through the cloud cover of June gloom. Made for nice pics.T

I enjoyed cooking on the Blackstone here at the beach. Here’s one dinner – leftover rotisserie chicken with broccoli, onions and mushrooms, and fried potatoes (white sweet potato) with a little Manchego cheese.

Dinner is done…time to relax and enjoy our ocean view…It’s a rough life!

Guess I don’t need to keep my apron on now. LOL

From the Strand it is a nice little bike ride into Coronado itself. We enjoy the town of Coronado. We parked the bikes and walked around town. I hope whoever lives in these homes in the future, keep up the gorgeous floral landscaping!

We celebrated Barry’s 65th birthday early with lunch at the Brigantine Restaurant at the Coronado location.

While the oysters Rockefeller were just OK, the swordfish entree’ that we shared was fabulous! Cooked to perfection!

We definitely needed a sweatshirt and/or jacket in the mornings and evenings, but our time at Sliver Strand State Beach did NOT disappoint! Till next time…
