Overnight at NY Costco

We ended up driving a bit further today than originally planned. Unfortunately, Walmart, Bass Pro Shop and other typically RV-friendly businesses did not allow an overnight stay in Connecticut. At least not along our route. I began calling places further down the road till I got an approval at a Costco in New York. It worked out great. Boy, did people stop and gawk as we pulled into the parking lot! We were able to go to the far side where there were very few cars. I went inside to do some shopping and to thank the manager for allowing us to stay. He wasn’t available so I left a thank you message.

The layout was not what I was used to, but the room to maneuver around was great. I couldn’t believe how spacious it is in every aisle! I’d say the aisles are at least 1 1/2 times the “normal” width with some maybe twice as wide!

Now I know why the layout feels spacious…there is a SECOND floor! The escalator to the second floor was pretty cool. An employee was stationed at the start to help ensure you and your cart safely got fully on the escalator. You are instructed to hold onto your cart all the way up.

There are two “tracks” for descending to the ground floor. The Costco employee angles your cart about 45 degrees on the designated “cart escalator”, as you step onto the pedestrian escalator that runs parallel to the carts. At the bottom an employee retrieves your cart from the escalator and you continue on your merry way.

Wine was on my list to get, but unfortunately, they do not sell wine at Costco in NY. Barry will have to make what he has last till we get to Washington, DC. He’ll make it just fine. 🙂

A Cutco representative was present at a temporary Cutco kiosk display. We chatted a for a few minutes as he demonstrated the knife sharpener for me. I loved how small it was, so after taking my groceries “home”, and talking to Barry about it, I went back in before they closed to purchase it. It came with a small cutting board that has since become a favorite. The sharpener easily fits in my knives drawer. 🙂

What a unique Costco experience! I thought it was great. As we pulled out in the morning we saw a sign that said that NO overnight parking was permitted. We were extremely grateful to the manager who allowed us as Costco members to shop and stay the night.

NYC here we come!!

  1. This is so cool! My husband and I love ALL things Costco so this was a fun one to read. We had no idea their layouts could be that different (2 floors?! 🤯). What a fun experience for you though!! Thanks for sharing!!

    1. Thank you, Becca. As we travel we have to be open to shopping at both Sam’s Club and Costco. Our preference is Costco overall, but I have to say I LOVE shopping at Sam’s Club using the Scan & Go feature on their app!
