7-10-18: Yellowstone – 3 days

Iconic Old Faithful

DAY 1
We started with a great RV spot outside the Mammoth area of Yellowstone. River rafters were having so much fun running the river behind us. Unfortunately, my right foot hit uneven ground as I stepped out of the motorhome. My ankle immediately gave out and I was on the ground. Initially, I could not move. Barry helped me to a chair in the shade and elevated my foot, but I went into shock and was about to pass out. 911 was called and the ambulance took me to the emergency room/clinic at Mammoth Hot Springs. The doctor expected it to be broken, but luckily it was not. A very bad sprain. I was nauseous and exhausted. I was now in a boot for a while. So much for day one in Yellowstone! We did purchase an annual National Park pass. Next year we are eligible to get the lifelong one!

DAY 2
Today we moved to just outside the west entrance to Yellowstone. We had a reservation at the Grizzly RV Resort. SUPER nice! A bit pricey, but very convenient and within walking distance to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. The Grizzly & Wolf where they take care of grizzlies who would otherwise be euthanized due to nuisance behavior that could endanger humans. It was a very cool experience. It has expanded so much since I first visited years ago with Abby, Richard, and my parents. The intent is to keep the wild instincts the bears naturally have, and not to make them “domesticated”. To do this, the bears are scheduled twice a day for time in the open area where they will actually forage for food as they would in the wild. Keepers keep actual human interaction with the bears minimal to health/safety issues only. They wear gloves as they hide appropriate snacks under logs, rocks, etc. They also provide a combo of berries and seeds in an ice block. It was really cool to watch the entire process. Some bears come out one at a time, some are siblings so come out together. One group had 3 bears because their personalities were more conducive to being social and playful with each other. For more information watch and listen to the videos below. ENJOY!

Grizzly videos (Still working to figure out how to load these videos…currently they are posting as images only)

Coram comes out first and is happy to do so. She will soon be joined by Grant & Roosevelt. (Super short video since I had my cell phone orientated vertically. oops.)

Grizzly bears, Grant and Roosevelt are happy to join Coram in the habitat where they may romp, swim and forage for treats. Treats of fruits, vegetables and kibble have been “buried” all around the grounds. Two “bear popsicles” have also been set out that are bucket-size ice with fresh berries. The ravens love hanging out here as well and fly in full force for snack times.

Pool time for grizzlies

Water fun continues

You can hear the Keeper giving lots of information about the grizzlies here at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. These are the two oldest at the center. They just tolerate each other, but don’t really interact. Grizzlies tend to be solitary animals unless mating.

DAY 3
Today we were doing a driving tour of Yellowstone from the West Entrance to an RV site in Grand Teton National Park. We stopped and parked to see Old Faithful. Spectacular as always. My walking boot was no problem, but walking from the edge of the parking lot where we could park Vinny and the Jeep (connected) to the viewing area for Old Faithful and back was enough. We did get a bonus though. As Old Faithful finished its show, the geyser further back and to the left starting erupting. It went even longer than Old Faithful and was as high or possibly even higher. Its hard to compare due to the distance away.
