Back to Pio Pico for 4 Weeks

September 1 we returned to Pio Pio Thousand Trails in Jamul, California. We visit here fairly regularly to have quality time with our grandkids. I also get a lot of good pickleball in at Mackenzie Creek Park since it is only about 10 minutes away–and close to the kids.

This post is mainly about the much needed changes and improvements that we saw happening at Pio! The first most effective changes began with the personnel change of Preserve Manager. Sheila has been the new manager since last year. She can be seen working around the park. When she is in her office the door is OPEN! Sheila’s work ethic is awesome! She doesn’t ask her rangers and other staff to do anything that she wouldn’t be willing to do. Overall Pio Pico TT is looking much better, both the physical park and the clientele and RVs parked there. Hopefully, it continues to improve over the next few years.

The more rustic side is getting much needed utility work. We heard that they are putting in some 50 amp, but even more needed are sites with sewer hookups!

The “resort” side where we tend to stay had most of the previously closed sites reopened. They have been working on fixing structural issues with water and sewer, unfortunately, the system is quite old. Other visible improvements:
The mini-golf had all new green felt installed!

The pool near the mini-golf and playground is undergoing a major overhaul.

Of course with the triple digits we experienced, it’s a shame this pool was unavailable, but luckily the other pool was up and running well! And believe me, it felt GREAT! We also seemed to time it well on the weekends to miss a large crowd both days. (STILL no spa working, but we needed the pool more than the spa.)

The Youth Center was repurposed to the billiards room. These are true billiard tables that are really nice. This was the first I’ve seen them. Evidently they were housed in a building across the street. You didn’t know about them unless you did the pool tournaments that Thousand Trails hosts at some of their parks.

Coyote Cafe went out of business last year during Covid. Rosy’s Bistro has taken its place. Rosy’s offers breakfast and lunch Fridays through Tuesdays from 7am to 2 pm. They use Boar’s Head meats and cheeses. It is nice and convenient for those who don’t like to fix their own breakfast or lunch, or like a break when out camping.

View out our front window!

We were very happy with our site – A4. It was spacious and very convenient to the park entrance. We had full hookups with 50 amp. That was really important with the triple digits and humidity during September! The power worked well! We stayed for 28 days with our extra week for $29 with our TT membership.
