We left the La Noue DuBois Winery at 7 am to drive the Million Dollar Highway. Today’s drive is only about 87 miles, but we need to get to Haviland Lake Campground earlier than normal since we are looking for a first-come, first-serve RV site.
We fully enjoyed the drive along the Million Dollar Highway. Beautiful scenery! There was really only one main section where the shoulder on the passenger side seemed to disappear! It especially made my stomach do a somersault since I was taking a picture out my window and as I took my phone down, I just saw the drop off!

The sun really brought out the colors in these.

A favorite section with the amazing mountains filling the background and rich, green evergreen contrasting a wonderful blue lake!

Whoops…only one lane for single directional driving at a time, but very glad that they were fixing this section.

It was important to arrive at Haviland Lake RV Campground about the time RVers would be leaving from the weekend. All sites that could be reserved were already booked, so we were winging it, hoping to score a “first-come, first-serve” site.

The camp hosts were out checking sites and would be back about 9:30, so we drove through the campground taking note of what sites appear to be open as of today. ALL sites have reserved signed with dates or already say OPEN. We returned to the check-in area where the hosts suggested that we take site 22. Being only 24 feet long we could pull into it and be pretty level. This site has more privacy than two others that were also available. Of all the sites in the campground, only 11 are first-come, first-serve sites! We really liked site 22, and it will work for us for both nights! It was nice to open up the back and the sliding door for wonderful airflow through Sadie. SO much room at this site!! Love National Forests and State Park sites!

We bought three bundles of wood to have a campfire both nights.

As I filled out the registration for our stay I discovered that this was US Forest land – within the San Juan National Forest! Therefore, I went to the camp hosts to see if that meant our America the Beautiful Senior Life Pass qualified for 50% off. It did! Instead of $32 a night, it was only $16! This day just keeps getting better and better!
We biked down to Haviland Lake…

A bee enjoying nectar from the same vibrant pink flowers that I loved.

What a quiet, peaceful campsite this has been! Colorado is ranking high in our book.
